The Communication Process

The way a message is understood can have a powerful influence on what it means to the receiver. For example: How would you "decode" this message?

Message: Possible decoding:
Are you doing anything on Saturday night?
  • Does he want to take me out on Saturday night?
  • Does he want me to work on Saturday night?
  • Does he think I have no friends and never go out?

Communication is not a simple process. To be an effective communicator, you must consider the following details:

  • What is the best method for sending the message?
  • How can I send the message so that my intention is understood and accepted?
  • How might the receiver understand the message I have sent?
  • When I receive a message, what can I do to understand it accurately?
  • How will the similarities and differences in or environments affect the communication process?
  • Can anything be done to reduce physical noise, physiological noise, and psychological noise?
